Layering Light in Your Living Room

Lighting your family room can be a tricky business. There are so many lighting options available. It can definitely be overwhelming. But not to worry. We are here to help!

Take a look through your living room and think of the different activities you would like to happen in the family room. For example, do you have a cozy armchair perfect for a cup of tea and a good book? Do you love to have family movie nights and want to be able to dim the lights for the theatrical effect?  These are areas where you may want to add layered lighting options.

Typically designers like to use four layers of light when creating the perfect feel in a room. The four types of lighting are:

  1. Natural Lighting
Featured Fixture: Euclid Chandelier in Matte Black

Of course, we all love to have bright beautiful windows in our home! Windows grant access to beautiful natural light. Depending on what direction your family room windows are, you will get a different feeling of natural light throughout the day. Knowing this will help you to bring in artificial lighting to manage the times of day where natural light is deficient.

2. Ambient Lighting

Featured Fixture: Beau Chandelier in Rubbed Brass

Ambient lighting is usually your overhead lighting. Often in family rooms this is overhead light that illuminates the majority of the room. Chandeliers, pot lights, flush mounts, and semi-flush mount lights are all great solutions for ambient lighting in the family room. It is always best to have these lights on a dimmer so you can adjust the amount of light coming from this source throughout the day.

3. Task Lighting

Featured Fixture: Calumet Floor Lamp in Matte Black and Polished Nickel

Task lighting allows a concentrated source of light to help execute a task. In your family room you may want task lighting in areas where you like to read, the kids do crafts, etc. Usually in the family room we see task lighting as a floor or table lamp.

4. Accent Lighting

Featured Fixture: Fontaine Wall Sconce in Polished Nickel

Accent lighting allows you to highlight different features in your family room. That could be your fireplace, a beautiful piece of artwork or within your cabinets. Oftentimes accent lighting can take the form of using wall sconces or integrated lighting solutions to draw the eye to the features of your home.

Kitchen Island Lighting 101

Ah. The magic of the kitchen island. It is one of the most used pieces of real estate in your kitchen. Here you prep meals for the family, you sign permission forms and go through the mail. It’s a busy and special place in the home. And the best part is, it’s one of the easiest and most fun places to play with your lighting design.

To give your kitchen a quick pick me up just change out your pendant lighting over your island with our quick tips.

What’s On the Ceiling?

Depending on how your kitchen island listing was planned you may have one main electrical boxes or multiple. If you have one main electrical box you can still have that multiple pendant look (without changing your wiring) but you will want to make sure that the fixture you select offers a long canopy to accommodate the multiple pendants.

If you are building your home, you may have more options to play with in regards to wiring above your kitchen island. Talk with your builder to see what your options are.

Sizing

When determining the size of your lighting fixtures for your kitchen island lighting it is incredibly important to know the length of your island and your ceiling height. No one wants to be bumping their head on a light while trying to cook dinner!

How Much Light Do You Need

Generally people prefer their kitchens to be bright with lots of light. When selecting your kitchen island lighting you want to pay attention to the shade of the lighting fixture. Metal shades will direct the light downwards giving you a ‘task lighting’ effect over your kitchen island. While open lights or clear glass shades will disperse the light in all directions working to illuminate more of the kitchen. Then there are white or opaque shades. These shades will illuminate more of your kitchen than a metal shade, but not as much as an open fixture or clear glass shades.

Feel Your Own Style:

This area of lighting should be where you can take a risk and bring out a little bit more personality to your kitchen. Whether that be something a little bit more vintage-inspired or something bright and bold. You can easily switch out these pendant lights when needing a refresh for your kitchen lighting.

Keep in mind other fixtures that may be in the sight line of your kitchen. You certainly don’t have to match everything together, but each fixture should compliment and flow with the others to create a cohesive look.
